Background

The Australasian Society for Breast Disease was incorporated in 1997 as a new multidisciplinary society to bring together all those interested in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and research aspects of breast disease.

In September 1998, the Society held its inaugural Scientific Meeting on the Gold Coast. Subsequent Meetings were held in 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2007, also on the Gold Coast. A smaller Meeting was held in Port Douglas in 2006 and a Surgical Workshop will be held 13-15 June 2008 in Sydney. The Society’s Seventh Scientific Meeting will be held in 2009 on the Gold Coast.

Membership to the Society is not limited. However, the membership of the national Executive is specifically defined so as to include representation from the major medical disciplines within the field of breast disease and also to provide for representation for membership from other discipline areas.

Goals

• To bring together individuals wherever in Australia, New Zealand and other Pacific rim countries, having the purpose of promoting better knowledge in biology, medicine and human sciences related to the breast in order to establish an Australasian society, with the intention of advancing multidisciplinary understanding and cooperation in the areas of prevention, detection, diagnosis and management of breast disease.
• To promote and encourage scientific research and publications related to the purposes of the Society.
• To instil an increased consciousness within the medical and lay communities with regard to breast disease, by using available means of education, information and publicity.
• To cooperate with relevant international associations, societies, other groups and individuals to promote the purposes of the Society.

Membership

Membership benefits of the Australasian Society for Breast Disease include a print subscription to and online access to full text articles of The Breast, a peer reviewed, bimonthly journal published by Elsevier under the imprint of Churchill Livingstone. The journal covers the physiology of the normal breast, the aetiology, biology, investigation, medical and surgical treatment and management of benign and malignant breast disease. The Society's group subscription to The Breast is around 45 percent of the normal personal subscription. In addition, the subscription provides the Australasian Society for Breast Disease with international exposure via formal representation on the Journal's editorial board, opportunity to publish Meeting abstracts and publicity for Meetings. Member subscribers also have access to discount on related Elsevier books (published under the imprints Elsevier, Churchill Livingstone, Saunders and Mosby). The resultant higher membership subscription fee is off set by the unique opportunity to access the highly respected journal at a very affordable rate. Members also have the option of subscribing to The Breast Journal and the Breast Diseases: A Year Book Quarterly, at a considerably reduced rate. In addition, members are entitled to discounted registration fees for the Society's Meetings.

The membership year runs from July to June.
